Presenter: Amanda Goodheart Parks Ph.D and Public Historian
During the 19th century men from thirty New England whaling communities sailed the world in the pursuit of whales leaving their wives and families behind for years at a time. That changed in the 1840’s when some couples defied tradition by going to sea together aboard whale ships. This lecture will focus on one of these remarkable couples-----Captain John and Elizabeth Marble of Fall River, Massachusetts----using the letters and journals they left behind to tell a story of love, life, and loss at sea.
