Program Description

Event Details

Fanny Mendelssohn (1805-1847) was one of the most gifted women of the 19th century. At the age of 13 she could play from memory half of the 48 preludes and fugues from Bach's "Well-Tempered Clavier." Her brother Felix thought she was the better pianist of the two and he was considered one of the greats of his day. She composed some 450 works over 27 years, but only a handful were performed in public or published in her lifetime.

Join Jeffrey Engle, Professor at Northwestern Community College and well-known lecturer, as he details "The Other Mendelssohn's" life, play excerpts from her oeuvre and explain why she didn't have a more successful career.
